A Chronicle of the Da Pinoys and Da Coconut Repablik of Da Pilipins
This is a breaking news for every nation on Earth. The Supreme Head of the Catholic Church Joseph Ratzinger known as Pope Benedict XVI had resigned and the position of the papacy will be vacant by February 28. As I write this article, a press conference is still ongoing regarding the details of his resignation. Benedict XVI in my opinion was quite an incompetent pope for me.
I still preferred the papacy of John Paul II than this guy. During this guy’s reign, sex scandals in the Church became rampant as ever. The Pope did not officially condemned the priests or the bishops, in fact I have a theory that the Pope shrugged these scandals or even tolerating it. The Catholic Church, especially its upper echelons need overhauling. I would rather prefer a Church with moderate clergymen than conservatives.
As usual, The Pope maintained his traditional rhetoric in opposing family planning, marriage equality and the controversial stance of the Church in the HIV/AIDS issue. It is actually a good riddance for me. I hope that a moderate Pope will be elected to replace him. Man, the Church needs reform.
The Vatican says it expects the period between the Pope’s resignation and the election of his successor to be as brief as possible, but there has been no confirmation on when cardinals will meet to choose a new pontiff.
In a statement, the pontiff said: “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.
“I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.
“However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.
“For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.”
A German government spokesman said he was “moved and touched” by the surprise resignation of the German-born pontiff.
“The German government has the highest respect for the Holy Father, for what he has done, for his contributions over the course of his life to the Catholic Church.
“He has left a very personal signature as a thinker at the head of the Church, and also as a shepherd.”
It is indeed a surprise for all of us. Until then guys, I see you on my next article. The Church must be open to changes and must ride in the flow of progress if they want to survive. I will update this blog as soon as more information becomes available. In other news, he has also renounced the title of the Sith Lord. By the way, he looks so cool in this picture.
So Vatican, who will be the next Top Pope? I dare you to make a show out of this. I am leaving you with a cool song for this week. Adios!
